II.1.4) Short description of the contract or purchase(s): As a result of
the recent fire in October 2005 the Pier head has seen destruction of
parts of the Grade II listed steel and timber structure and the timber
decking. Several of the building including the pier station, public house,
Cafe, Public WC', Kiosk, gift shop and timber berthing area and train
tracks were also destroyed.
Initial work has been carried out to provide temporary access route over
the fire damaged sections of the Pier and train platform to allow
emergency access to the undamaged Pier Head for the Royal National
Lifeboat Institution. Remaining unsafe structures were demolished and
cleared.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council are now looking to appoint an experienced
Contractor to undertake the complete reinstatement of all the destroyed
buildings and damaged structural framework of the Pier for a like for like
basis. The area of work is approximately 2,000 square metres and a mile
out from the coast in the Thames Estuary.
